About different stone countertops
Granite
This ingenous rock was once in molten formed and cooled within the earth's crust. It is dense and has larger grains than most natural stones. It continues to be one of the most popular choices for kitchen countertops because of its durability, heat resistance, and anti-bacterial properties and wide range of colors and veining. Every slab is distinctive and unique.
Marble
This stone started out as limestone and underwent a natural process of extreme heat and pressure within the earth. Though marble is denser than limestone it is more porous and softer than granite. Marbles vein patterns can vary tremendously from intense movement to no veining at all.
Subtypes:
-
Limestone is a porous material with little to no veining. Some slabs have natural small fossils embedded into the make up of the stone. The natural colors of limestone range in varying shades of beige, tan, brown, gray and even green.
-
Travertine is exteremly porous and were mostly formed around hot springs hundreds of thousands of years ago. The evaporation of water left a distinct sponge like appearance. These small cavities can be as large as two inches wide but are usually filled with cement to create a smooth surface for countertops and tiles. Although there are options for unfilled tile for wall applications.
-
Onyx is a semi-precious gemstone. It has unparralled characteristics and coloring. It has a translucent property which allows the countertop to literally glow with backlighting.
-
Calcite Crystal has a unique crystal structure that is not found in other natural stones. This is the hardest of the marbles , due to its crystal structure and has a translucent depth.
-
Dolomite is the most durable of the marble family because it is more dense and does not immediately react with acids. It has slightly larger grains than better known calcite marbles, such as carrara and calacatta.
Soapstone
This is another metamorphic rock with very distinct properties. It is non-porous, and unaffected by heat. It is softer than granite and gains a natural patina. Its colors range from almost every shade of grey to green. Some varieties have intricate white or green veining to little or no veining at all. It can be waxed or oiled to achieve a rich, dark look or left in its natural light grey or green state.
Quartzite
This metamorphic rock has gained more popularity in recent years and is actually harder than granite. It was once sandstone, which went through extreme heat and pressure making it much more dense than sandstone. Its colors range from off white, beige, peach to even blue. Quartzite has strenghth, beauty and durability.
Quartz
This is a man-made stone consisting of 93% natural quartz particles with pigments and resins. It is non-porous and stain, heat, and scratch resistant. There are many brands of quartz such as Caesarstone, Pental Quartz, Q Premium, Quartz Master and Cambria. Each brand creates their own slabs of different shades, patterns, and colors that cannot be found in natural stone.
